Cochlear Implants are appropriate for people of all ages who have significant "nerve" hearing loss. A Cochlear Implant is a device that is placed in the ear during an operation. The implant changes sounds into electrical signals that stimulate the hearing nerve. The person with the implant recognizes these electrical signals as sound. With the cochlear implant, a person who could not hear soft sounds or understand speech well may be able to improve their ability to communicate. You can read in more detail about the implant at the Cochlear Corporation and Advanced Bionics Corporation websites.

The professionals at the Atlanta Cochlear Implant Group are dedicated to helping each individual communicate better, whether through hearing aids, auditory training, or a cochlear implant. Since 1988, more than 250 people have received their cochlear implant from the Atlanta Cochlear Implant Group. Although all patients will not have the same results with the implant, our patients usually score higher than the national average on tests of speech understanding.

We establish a life long commitment with patients who receive a cochlear implant from our office. We strive for prompt and accessible equipment maintenance, annual evaluations, and technological advances to make the best possible benefit from the implant for each individual. The Atlanta Cochlear Implant Group participates as a selected clinic in the investigation of new cochlear implant technology with both Cochlear Corporation and Advanced Bionics Corporation.

To determine if an individual is eligible to receive a cochlear implant, we carefully evaluate:

- The type and degree of hearing loss

- Ability to hear and understand speech using hearing aids

- History of hearing aid use

- Current communication skills

- Motivation to improve communication skills

We emphasize an auditory approach for rehabilitation and work with numerous therapists to provide long term speech-language therapy and auditory training. For an appointment for evaluation to determine if you or someone you know may be eligible for the cochlear implant, call
